It reaches the thermostat setting quickly, shuts down, and starts again minutes later. Starting is the hard part for any compressor or burner, so the wear and the noise are concentrated in it, and it never runs long enough to even out temperatures between rooms.
On the coldest and hottest days it runs continuously and still loses ground, usually in the room furthest from the equipment. Backup electric heat picks up the difference, and the bill quietly follows.
